Top Asked Appliance Questions: Part Two
/Your Top Asked Appliance Questions
In the newest installment of our top asked appliance questions blog series, we dive deeper into all the questions that we receive here at Appliance Educator. In this blog, we will answer the most commonly asked questions about Range Hoods. You don’t want to miss out on this!
What is the purpose of a range hood?
The main function of a range hood is to improve air quality by eliminating the products of combustion, odors, and moisture from the air. The hood is there to protect you, and it looks nice too!
How high should I mount my range hood above my stove?
This depends on the range hood manufacturer, however anywhere between 30-36” is a good rule of thumb!
What size range hood is best for my oven?
Great question! For wall-mounted range hoods and ovens, we recommend the same size hood or bigger. However, for Island installs we recommend a size up. This is so all of the grease and smoke from the stovetop will be properly vented. For outdoor hoods, we recommend a size up from the grill width as well.
How do I know if I need a recirculating or ducted hood?
This is a great and very common question! This depends on what kind of ventilation you are looking for. Ducted hoods take the smoke, grease, and other combustion and bring it outside your home. A recirculating range hood will clean the air and put it back into your house. Typically, ducted hoods are more efficient, but a recirculating hood is also a great option.
How do range hood charcoal filters work?
The purpose of charcoal filters is to filter out the air to make it clean again, without any external ducting.
How often do charcoal filters on a ductless range hood need to be changed out?
This often depends on how much you are cooking and the hood model, but six months is usually a good rule of thumb!
How do I clean baffle filters on my range hood?
For many companies, such as our partner ZLINE Kitchen and Bath, they are dishwasher safe! However, it is always important to check with the manufacturer.
How often should non-ducted baffle filters be replaced?
Again, this depends on the range hood manufacturer. However, about 120 hours of cooking time is the time frame we recommend if your range hood brand does not have that information!
What does CFM mean?
A range hood’s CFM is the power of air movement that is measured in cubic feet per minute.
What CFM level do I need?
You can calculate the CFM three ways:
By stove size: (Stove width / 12”) x 100
By room size: Length ft x Width ft x Height ft
By stove BTU’s: Total Stove BTU’s / 100
Do I need a chimney extension or a short kit?
You might! This generally depends on if you are able to meet the proper height distance between your oven and range hood. Oftentimes, manufacturers will have required ceiling heights in their specifications, which will tell you if you need a short kit or an extension kit.
How do I install my range hood?
This is a fairly simple process, and most can do it themselves! We even have a how-to video done by our very own Appliance Educator! Check it out here.
