Range Hoods
+ How do I calculate the CFM needed for my range hood?
You can calculate the CFM three ways
By stove size: (Stove width / 12”) x 100
By room size: Length ft x Width ft x Height ft
By stove BTU’s: Total Stove BTU’s / 100.
+ How high should I mount my hood above my stove?
Always check with the manufacturer first, but the typical rule of thumb is typically anywhere between 28-36".
+ What is the width of the range hood that I need for my installation?
For wall-mounted indoor installations, the range hood will need to be the same width as the range/rangetop you are installing it over. For island-mounted installations and outdoor range hoods, we suggest going up a size in width. For islands, a larger size will allow for the hood to efficiently catch the grease and smoke rather than going around the sides of the hood. For outdoor hoods, grills produce much more grease and smoke - so the addition of a larger hood will be preferred to operate successfully.
+ What is the depth of the range hood that I need for my installation?
It is recommended to cover at least 100% of back burners and 50% of front burners.
+ How do I know if I need to have a recirculating range hood?
If you do not have the option to vent your range hood outside, you can purchase a recirculating range hood (also called a ductless range hood). These hoods will need a set of filters to be installed so they can clean the air that is vented through the bottom of your hood and push the cleansed air back into your kitchen.
+ How do range hood charcoal filters work?
The filters will differ depending on which appliance manufacturer you are purchasing from. However, the purpose of charcoal filters are to purify the air that is vented through when you are using your range hood.
+ How often do the charcoal filters for my range hood need to be replaced?
Always check with the manufacturer first, but it is typically around 6 months depending on your cooking habits and usage.
+ How do I clean the baffle filters of my range hood?
Always check with the manufacture of your product first, but typically, they can be taken down and washed in the dishwasher.
+ How do I vent my range hood?
If you have a ducted range hood you will need to run your chimney to the top of your ceiling containing your ventalation, and run it outside. If you have a ductless range hood then your range hood will safely recirculate that air back into the kitchen.
+ How do I install a range hood?
If you're installing a range hood, watch our how-to video here!
+ What is the difference between ducted and ductless range hoods?
Ducted or vented range hoods duct outside of your home, while ductless or non-vented range hoods recirculate back into your kitchen! Typically, ductless hoods have a special type of filter that needs to be replaced depending on how often and what you cook! Be sure to check with the manufacturer's specific requirements for ductless range hoods.
Ranges
+ Do I need a ventaliation system for my range?
We recommend using a ventilation system for your range, as they help keep your air clean and free of smoke. Cooking can cause grease, smoke, and other chemicals to be released into the air. A ventilation system such as a range hood or a microwave with an underneath venting can help eliminate these and keep your house's air fresh and clean.
+ How do I clean the burners of my range?
To clean the burner caps, first remove them by lifting them from the burners. Use warm, soapy water to clean the burner caps. Ensure these caps are dried completely before placing them back on the burners.
+ How do I clean the enamel of my range?
We recommend using warm, soapy water applied with a soft sponge or towel. Be sure to avoid using abrasive cleaning solutions or tools, as well as leaving acid-based substances on the range's enamel.
+ What is the difference between a free-standing range and a slide-in range?
A slide-in range is meant to be placed between your kitchen countertops to have a flush finish, as this range is not finished on either side or in the back. A free-standing range is finished on both sides, so you can place this range either between your countertops or on its own!
+ Which is preferred: Electric or gas ovens?
Please refer to our blog on choosing between a gas or electric range. This includes in-depth descriptions of both electric and gas range ovens. Find it on the blog tab on our site!
+ How do I find how many BTU's my range has?
Most kitchen appliance manfacturer's have the BTU's of their ranges listed on their websites. Try searching your brand and model number, or give their customer service line a call for the exact BTU's.
+ My oven door won't open. How do I fix this?
- Make sure your oven is cooled down and not too hot to burn yourself.
- If your oven has a self-cleaning feature, try running a cleaning cycle then cancelling after 5 minutes.
- If the door is still locked, unplug the range for 5 minutes before replugging it back in.
- Check the owner’s manual to see if any settings on the control keypad or knobs have to be in specific places in order for the door to unlock.
- Take the panel off the back (typically on the back wall near the top) to find and unplug the wire harness for the oven temperature sensor. Check your owner’s manual or the manufacturer's website to find out the proper resistance of the temperature sensor and use a multimeter at the Rx1 setting to see if your sensor’s at the correct resistance.
- If the door is still not open, you’ll need to call a repairman to put a new sensor in the wire harness.
+ My oven won't turn on. How do I fix this?
- Make sure the range is plugged in, and there's nothing wrong with the outlet.
- Check and make sure the baking element isn't visibly damaged, then using a multimeter check for continuity. If there's none you'll need to replace the baking element.
- While on, check the igniter to see if it glows for more than 90 seconds without igniting the gas flame. If it doesn't this means it's too weak. If it doesn't glow at all check the continuity and if there's none you'll need to replace it.
- If none of these seem to be the issue we recommend calling a repairman, because you may need to replace your Bake/Broil Spark Electrode, or the Thermal Fuse.
+ My oven light won't turn on. How do I fix this?
Check the lightbulb, light socket, and light switch with a multimeter for continuity. If none of these seem to be an issue you'll need to order a new transformer. Contact your manufacturer and they should be able to ship you out a new transformer kit!
+ How does a self-cleaning oven work?
The self-cleaning feature works by bringing the oven up to around 800 degrees fahrenheit, and softening up any hardened food remains, making it easier for you to clean once it has cooled.
+ How do I clean oven racks?
- Place oven racks inside an unused trash bag.
- Add 1/2 quart of ammonia, seal the bag, and leave somewhere outside overnight where it won't be tampered or damaged.
- Open the bag in the morning, and if bringing inside make sure there's lots of ventilation from the harmful fumes. Rinse and scrub the racks thoroughly, dry, and replace.
+ How do I clean an oven?
- Fill a medium-sized, oven-proof mixing bowl with water.
- Cut two lemons in half and place them in the bowl, then heat your oven to 250 degrees. Then, place the mixing bowl inside on one of the racks. Leave for one hour.
- After an hour, turn off the oven, open the door and let it cool. While the oven is still warm but not warm enough to burn you, put on gloves, take a damp cloth and wipe down all surfaces.

+ What is a dual fuel range?
Dual fuel ranges are stoves that feature an oven that uses an electrical connection and the stovetop that uses a gas connection! So therefore you are using both electrical and gas for your range!
+ Why is my oven not heating up effectively?
The heating element may not be heating up effectively, because it may not have continuity. You can check this using a multimeter. If it reads lower than your owners manual indicates it should, you may want to contact your manufacturer for a replacement part.
+ What is convection?
Simply put, a convection oven has a fan and exhaust system that a regular oven does not. The fan and exhaust help to blow hot oven air over and around the food, then vent it back out. This hot air surrounds the food so that it cooks evenly and more quickly.
