How to Install a Fireclay Sink
/For our next blog and video in the Sink Installation Series, our Appliance Educator shows you how to install a fireclay sink! Every sink installation has different requirements and challenges, which is why we break down all the steps for each one. Our partners at ZLINE Kitchen and Bath provided each of the sinks for us to install and we could not be happier with the quality and look of their sinks. For demonstration purposes, our Appliance Educator used a pre-cut composite quartz-like counter to mount the sink on. If you’re installing a brand new counter and need to cut into your granite or concrete counter, we recommend hiring a contractor since that material can be difficult to work on without the proper tools or experience.
Fireclay sink installations can be a bit trickier with more labor intensive demands and more tools needed to install. The tools needed include: a circular saw or miter saw, a 2x4 stud, 3 inch deck screws, a drill, and a fireclay sink.
The first step is to get your measurements. Fireclay sinks are heavy and bulky, which requires you to build a support system to hold the sink up. In order to do this, your measurements need to be as accurate as possible. First, you’ll want to measure the height of the sink, then measure the height of the countertop. Subtract the height of the countertop with the height of the sink to determine the height the structure needs to be. The width of the structure will equal the width of the sink. The structure should be a rectangular box shape and should be put together using a drill, the 2x4 wood pieces, and deck screws. See the picture from our video for an example.
Next, you’ll place the structure in the space that your fireclay sink will be sitting on top of. Now, you’ll want to clean the rim of the fireclay sink and apply a generous bead of silicone sealant around the sink rim. Place the sink into your cutout and on top of the wood structure.
For the last step, you’ll want to gently place your countertop on the sink, and ensure the sealant provides a complete seal between the countertop and sink. Wipe off any extra sealant and apply extra where there are any gaps.
