The kitchen is the heart of many homes and is important for bringing families and friends together. It’s  where families come together at the end of a day, friends join for dinner parties, and a place to pass down sacred family recipes.  This space should reflect your style as it is such a pivotal place in the home. It’s a place that lasting memories are made, and you’ll want those memories to be remembered in a kitchen that embodies your style.

Choosing a style can be a difficult decision when there are so many options to choose from, especially as home trends and designs change pretty frequently.  The Appliance Educator team is here to bring you the ultimate kitchen style guide to help you get a feel for which is right for you! Traditional

The traditional style is often confused with Old World - which incorporates blues and golds with an antique style. Traditional incorporates more neutral hues with subtle and unique accessories. It encompasses many styles and incorporates natural accents such as wood, marble, brick, or stone that give a handcrafted look. A great aspect of this style is that it allows you to mix and match styles to create detail with color and texture.

How to create the look:

  • Add crown molding and cabinet door trim to create the base of the traditional look. You can also add pieces of furniture that have unique curved lines and moldings rather than pieces with simple, straight lines. Straight lines will create a more modern look so you will want to stick to more intricate lines and detailed trimmings!

  • Using irregular patterns in your wood or flooring can create a more natural feel.  You can also mix and match patterns and materials to create a traditional look.

  • Create unique focal points throughout the kitchen such as lighting, knobs, and designs. These focal points should have embellishments and curved lines to create a more traditional style. l. This is a fun way to make your kitchen unique while still creating a traditional feel!

Farmhouse

Like traditional kitchens, farmhouse-style kitchens incorporate natural materials such as oak or wood. Many accents are also used to create the farm aesthetic, such as antique farm decor or rustic touches. Farmhouse kitchens tend to incorporate large ranges, sinks, and dining tables to make the most out of the entertainment space.  The kitchen should feel warm and welcoming with some country comfort feel.

How to create this look:

  • Opt for cabinets, chairs, and other accents made from hardware like cherry, maple, oak, or pine.

  • Choose large appliances such as a 36” to 48” range to create the farmhouse look. You can also choose a large “farm-sink” that is usually made of porcelain or fireclay with an apron front.

  • Choose a high-quality large wood table. Often called “farm tables”, they create the perfect addition to your kitchen to create the ultimate open, country home feeling.

  • Lastly, choose rustic decor to complete the farmhouse look. This can be wood signs, mason jars, or antique artwork or decor that has that rustic, farm-like design.

Modern

Modern kitchens are designed with sleek, flat surfaces, geometric forms, and have little to no accessories and embellishments. These kitchens feature more man-made materials for cabinets and countertops such as ceramics, marbles, laminates, or metals. Furniture and appliances should feature a modern theme and possibly have bold colors and unique, sleek designs to create a modern look.

How to create the look:

  • Choose appliances that are modern and sleek. They can be made of stainless steel and or with some pops of color. The appliances should feel modern and advanced, but don’t necessarily have to be in order to create the look.

  • Choose colorful cabinets. Creating a modern kitchen can still include fun colors. Just choose one color to stick with and paint a few cabinets - or all of them! If you’re not open to colorful cabinets, just add a few pops of color with appliances or decor. Just keep all other colors and surfaces neutral.

  • Choose fun decor such as geometric fixtures. Fun light fixtures or accessories can instantly add a modern feel to a kitchen. Just be sure the lines of these fixtures are clean and straight.
