What Does ADA Mean?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ensures individuals with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. This act prohibits discrimination against people in all areas of public life, including work, schools, transportation, public, and private places. For appliances, ADA Compliance is met when individuals with disabilities are able to fully access and operate the appliance.

What Makes a Range Hood ADA Compliant?

ADA Compliant range hoods require full access to the button panel controls that operate all functions on the range hood, such as the lighting and fan power settings. These range hoods will have a remotely installed button panel, wireless button panel, and/or a dedicated standard wall switch. Section 309 of the ADA Standards for Accessible Design states,  “All operable parts shall be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate the operable parts shall be 5 lbs.”

If you would like an ADA compliant range hood that is connected to a dedicated wall switch, ensure the compatible wall switch is purchased with your range hood if available. This type of installation requires the hiring of an electrician as well. According to the ADA Standards, any operable parts or wall switches have to be located within 15-48 inches above the floor.
