Black stainless appliances have been around for years, but they seem to be in the spotlight now more than ever in kitchen design trends. We love keeping up with trends, but some may be weary because appliances are something you purchase for the long-run. But, let’s be honest–black is never out of trend! If you’re wanting to change up your kitchen space by upgrading your appliances or remodeling your home, why not take it to the next level by adding a sleek upgrade? If you’re big on kitchen design, you know the aesthetics of kitchen appliances can really make or break it.

What is Black Stainless Steel?

Each appliance brand that offers black stainless uses a unique process to create this finish. The most traditional method is a process called “blackening”, which uses a conversion coating for stainless steel to minimize any light reflection.

Benefits of Black Stainless

Most major kitchen appliance brands make their black stainless appliances fingerprint-resistant and smudge-resistant. Constantly seeing fingerprints on the fridge and having them clean them is one of the biggest pains! Could you imagine not having to worry about the unpleasant sight of a dirty appliance? This is a dream made to reality with black stainless appliances.

Tip: For cleaning, brands typically recommend using a soft cloth (such as a micro-fiber cloth) and warm water to wipe off any spills. Although it may be a given, never use abrasive cleaners or rough sponges!

Black stainless appliances have versatility – meaning they can complement both neutral tones and colors. This is a great perk as a homeowner because you won’t be limited by what you can change if you decide to remodel your home.

As we said, black will always be a color that is in style – and would give any home a sleek and modern upgrade. Major trusted appliance brands offer black stainless kitchen suites, such as LG, KitchenAid, and Bosch.

Drawbacks of Black Stainless

Many worry about scratching black stainless because of its coating, but stainless steel appliances will do the same. You may need to be more careful with this during installation, but if installed and used correctly–you won’t have to worry about this issue! For a long-lasting and beautiful appliance, we always believe in handling it with care.

Side note: Major kitchen appliance companies such as Bosch offer black stainless appliances that guard against scratches!

Since companies manufacture their black stainless finishes differently, it may be difficult for you to know which shade of black the appliance is. We always recommend doing thorough research on any appliances, if possible-viewing the product in person beforehand, or purchasing a sample of the finish offered by most major appliance brands!

It’s safe to say our team at Appliance Educator says “yay” for black stainless steel appliances. It is a unique and sleek upgrade, along with the major benefits of being smudge and fingerprint resistant. With that being said, would you purchase a black stainless steel appliance?
