Buyer’s Guide for Island Range Hoods
/Whether you’re upgrading your kitchen island or planning a new remodel, island range hoods are a great upgrade for any home. An island range hood not only allows for the functional benefit of venting out smoke and grease while cooking – who doesn’t love the idea of never set off the fire alarm? – but it allows you to have a central location of the kitchen where you can enjoy cooking your daily meals and entertaining your dinner guests.
Know the Basics
Before you take the plunge of purchasing a big kitchen appliance, there are a few factors to keep in mind to ensure you find the perfect island range hood for you. First, it is important to select the hood that meets your kitchen specification requirements. Range Hoods are categorized by a number of things, but the most imperative is the CFM (cubic feet per minute) rating. The minimum CFM needed can be calculated in three different ways:
By stove size: (Stove width / 12”) x 100
By room size: Length ft x Width ft x Height ft
By stove BTU’s: Total Stove BTU’s / 100
It is important to picture what an island range hood will look like when installed, as it is going to reduce the visibility in your kitchen. Range hood installations typically require a clearance of 30-36 inches above the stove. If you have a smaller kitchen space, we suggest searching for an island range hood with a slimmer profile to help with this.
Another way to narrow down your search for the perfect hood is by determining which ventilation system you can and want to have. The best option would be to vent the hood directly outside. However, some homes do not allow this kind of installation. If you fall under this category, you will need to search for ductless hoods and purchase the necessary filter accessories for it. Ductless range hoods allow you to recirculate the air back into the kitchen.
Lastly, the cost is always an important factor with any buying decision – make sure you know what you are willing to spend for your range hood. If you are planning on hiring an installer, it is good to keep in mind how much the installation costs will be so you are not surprised when you calculate the total costs later on!
Size Up
Since Island Range Hoods are installed on the ceiling, it is strongly recommended from many big-brand kitchen appliance companies choose an island range hood that is one size bigger in width than the stove you are installing it over, e.g. if your stovetop is 30 inches in width, you will want to purchase a 36-inch island range hood. This is simply so the hood will pull up the smoke and grease coming up from your burners instead of going around the range hood. Little details such as sizing are imperative – if you spend hundreds of dollars on a product, you would want to it work perfectly for your kitchen.
Be Knowledgeable of the Installation
A common misconception of range hood installations is that the average homeowner cannot install it themselves. The installation can be simple if you select the right brand.
